III. The Church in Pergamos. vv. 12–17. Pergamos (also spelled Pergamum in some ancient sources) was sixty miles north of Smyrna, built on a mountaintop thirteen hundred feet above the Caicus River valley. It was a major center for three different varieties of idolatrous worship. The great temple and hospital of Aesculapius, the god of healing, was there.
